It’s
built in the Eastern side of the island, in amphitheatricall form and
is the biggest commercial and passenger harbour of the island, with rich
historical importance since her early inhabitants, the Aeolian. Homeland
of Pittakos, one of the 7 wise men of antiquity, and the poet Alkaeos. Today is a city with big commercial, tourist and cultural development. The traveller can visit the old and new market, the enormous castle, the ancient theatre, the Archaeological and Byzantine museum, the museum of Theofilou and Teriant in Varia, the marvellous churches, the traditional house of Mrs. Vlahou, the jetty with all the commercial shops, the banks, the statue of Liberty, the statue of Sappfo, the beach of GREEK TOURISTIC ORGANISATION and finally admire the neoclassic Bavarian style architecture residences . It is a city that will really fascinate the visitor with the culture and her beauty. |
