It's built in the Eastern side of the island, in amphitheatricall form and is the biggest commercial and passenger harbour of the island, with rich historical importance since her early inhabitants, the Aeolian. Homeland of Pittakos, one of the 7 wise men of antiquity, and the poet Alkaeos.

Today is a city with big commercial, tourist and cultural development.
