Petra is the centre of the new, expanded Municipality Petra includes the villages of Lafionas, Skoutaros, Stipsi and Ypsilometopo, together with the hamlets of Anaxos and Petri. It has an area of 7.533 hectares and a population of approximately 3.700.

Petra is a seaside village, spreading over a verdant plain and thanks to its broad and sandy beach it has developed into a busy tourist centre with a lively night life.

Its name (petra = stone or rock) comes from the rock which stands like a meteorite in the middle of the village the site of the Church of Our Lady Glykofilousa.

Tradition claims that Petra served as an anchorage for Achilles during the Trojan War.

It has 1,150 inhabitants and is 57 kilometres northwest of Mytilene. Anaxos is 3 kilometres west of Petra and is a holiday village with a broad sandy beach whose beauty has attracted tourism to the area. The other villages are higher õp in the mountains and their residents make their living from stockbreeding and cultivating olives.

Today Petra has many hotels, apartments, studios, maisonettes, houses, villas, car rentals, restaurants, waiting from you to visit them.
